The Ultimate Summer Nail Care Guide: How to Keep Your Gel Nails Looking Beautiful All Season Long
The Ultimate Summer Nail Care Guide: How to Keep Your Gel Nails Looking Beautiful All Season Long
Summer in Mallorca is one of the most beautiful times of year. Between beach days, swimming, boat trips, holidays, outdoor adventures, and long sunny afternoons, many of us spend far more time enjoying the outdoors than we do during the cooler months.
While all that sunshine and sea air can be wonderful for the soul, summer can also be surprisingly tough on your nails.
As a Nail Artist in Palma de Mallorca, I often notice that clients experience more lifting, breakages, and wear during the summer months compared to the rest of the year. Fortunately, a few simple habits can help keep your nails healthy, strong, and beautiful all season long.
Here are my top summer nail care tips.
Consider Going Slightly Shorter for Summer
If you’re someone who becomes more active during summer, it may be worth considering a slightly shorter nail length.
This doesn’t mean you need to sacrifice beautiful nails. However, activities such as swimming, paddle boarding, hiking, climbing over rocks, playing with children, gardening, exercising outdoors, or spending more time at the beach can place additional stress on longer nails.
One of the most common causes of nail breakage is simply having a length that no longer suits your lifestyle.
I personally wear my nails longer throughout the winter months when I’m generally less active with my hands. During summer, I often shorten them slightly to better accommodate my lifestyle.
A small reduction in length can significantly reduce the likelihood of cracks, breaks, and accidental trauma.
Don’t Leave Sunscreen Sitting on Your Nails
Sunscreen is essential for protecting your skin, but it’s a good habit to wipe excess product off your nails after application.
Many sunscreens contain oils and chemical ingredients that can leave a residue on the nail surface, causing your manicure to lose some of its shine over time.
This applies to both manicures and pedicures.
After applying sunscreen, simply give your nails a quick wipe if possible. It’s a small step that helps keep them looking fresh and glossy.
Keep Cuticle Oil in Your Beach Bag
If there’s one product I wish every client carried during summer, it’s cuticle oil.
Sun exposure, salt water, chlorine, air conditioning, and frequent hand washing can all contribute to dryness around the nails and cuticles.
Applying cuticle oil regularly helps:
Keep the surrounding skin hydrated
Maintain flexibility in the natural nail
Improve the overall appearance of your manicure
Support healthy nail growth
I personally keep cuticle oil with me throughout the summer and reapply it after spending time in the sea.
Think of it as sunscreen for your nails’ best friend.
In fact, dermatologists also recommend regularly moisturizing the nails and surrounding skin to help maintain healthy-looking nails and reduce dryness, especially when exposed to environmental stressors such as sun, water, and frequent washing.
Be Mindful During the First 24–48 Hours After Your Appointment
One of the most important periods after receiving a fresh set of gel nails is the first 24 to 48 hours.
Swimming is generally not a problem, but prolonged soaking should be avoided whenever possible.
This means avoiding:
Hot tubs
Long baths
Extended soaking in warm water
Excessive exposure to water immediately after your appointment can increase the chances of premature lifting.
The goal isn’t to stop enjoying your summer—it’s simply to give your fresh manicure the best possible start.
Understand Why Summer Can Increase Lifting
Even clients with excellent nail retention sometimes experience slightly more lifting during summer.
Why?
Because our hands are exposed to more moisture.
Swimming pools, the sea, frequent hand washing, humidity, and sweat all create additional moisture exposure that isn’t as common during cooler seasons.
Water and nail enhancements aren’t particularly good friends.
This is why maintaining regular appointments becomes especially important during summer. Small areas of lifting can be addressed quickly during routine maintenance before they develop into larger issues.
Don’t Ignore Lifting
If you’re naturally prone to lifting, summer is not the time to postpone your maintenance appointments.
When lifting occurs, a small pocket can develop between the natural nail and the enhancement.
If moisture repeatedly enters that space and becomes trapped, it can create an environment where bacteria or fungal infections may develop.
This is particularly important if you’re travelling, spending extended periods in humid climates, or delaying your fills longer than recommended.
Regular maintenance appointments allow small areas of lifting to be safely addressed before they become larger problems.
Protect Your Investment
Beautiful nails are an investment, and a little extra care goes a long way.
By keeping your nails at a practical length, using cuticle oil regularly, wiping sunscreen residue away, and staying on top of your maintenance appointments, you can enjoy strong, beautiful nails throughout the entire summer season.
Whether you’re spending your days relaxing at a beach club, exploring hidden calas, travelling abroad, or simply enjoying the sunshine here in Mallorca, these small habits can make a noticeable difference.
